The Grumman F9F Panther was a pioneering carrier-based jet fighter, and Grumman's first jet aircraft, that played a significant role in the Korean War. : It was one of the first successful carrier-based jet fighters for the US Navy. The F9F was used extensively by both the US Navy and Marine Corps in the Korean War, flying 78,000 sorties and primarily serving in ground-attack and close air support roles. It achieved the first air-to-air kill for the US Navy in the conflict, shooting down a North Korean Yak-9 fighter. A total of 1,382 Grumman F9F Panther aircraft were built. This included various versions and modifications of the Panther jet fighter, which was one of the first successful carrier-based jet fighters for the US Navy.
